About Xai Xai
The town of Xai-Xai is situated on the Limpopo River and is a sprawling settlement of houses, markets and shops. Xai-Xai bustles – it is a town with markets, shops, restaurants, bars, petrol stations banks, and a post office and is the capital of Gaza Province. The central market is a must see for any tourists and is a favourite with its local food and beer, as well as a bit of vintage shopping. A few blocks from there is an open-air furniture factory, located underneath several cashew trees.
The beach, known as Praia do Xai-Xai (beach of Xai-Xa) and approximately 12km from Xai-Xai, has been a popular tourist attraction since Mozambican tourism was first developed. If you are on holiday, a backpacker or just a passer by with no transport you can also catch the bus or a chapa in or out of town, or even a friendly local could offer you a lift. A 4×4 is preferable but not essential, as most of the bars and lodges are accessible by car.
A coral reef running parallel to the shore offers good snorkeling and protects the beach from strong waves. Fancy a nice stroll? The Wenela Tidal Pool (or the blowhole), is about a 1km walk from Bamboo Beach Bar and includes a natural tunnel and blow hole in a reef that links the pool to the Indian Ocean. Take your flops, sunscreen and your camera as there are some great pics to be taken.
